Mission

The CTE mission of the Newton High School staff is to help students graduate with knowledge and the ability to apply that knowledge in future training/education and their chosen careers.

Overview

NHS Career and Technical Education pathways deliver unique opportunities which expand traditional school-based experiences to include the development of high-level technical skills, career-related skills and skills for life-long learning. Application-based instruction facilitates knowledge retention by combining thinking skills with doing skills, and by providing contextual, relevant instruction. CTE courses stimulate motivation and encourage students to expand their minds and to explore challenging options.

CTE is designed to help students develop academic skills, technical skills and workplace skills with practical, world-of-work applications. Students learn to make the connection between academics and all classroom learning to their life outside the school environment.

Components

All CTE programs/pathways are comprised of the following:

  • Classroom-based learning (academics, theory)
  • Experience-based learning (labs, on the job training, practical applications of skills)
  • Business/community partnerships (advisory boards, student shadows/internships
  • Student organizations (leadership opportunities; develops self-confidence, self-esteem)
  • Assessment of student progress/skill attainment
  • Post-secondary connections (articulated credit)
